How do I rotate a video 90 degrees in Premiere Pro?
Select the clip, open Effect Controls, expand Motion and set Rotation to 90 for clockwise or -90 for counterclockwise. Then match the sequence frame size if needed.
Quick answer: select the clip on the timeline, open the Effect Controls panel, expand Motion and set Rotation to 90 (or 180, or -90). Positive values turn the clip clockwise.
Rotating inside a landscape sequence leaves black bars down the sides, so you'll usually change the sequence frame size too. Both steps are below, along with how to flip a video in Premiere and when it's quicker to fix the clip before you import it.
Click the clip in the Timeline panel.
Open the Effect Controls panel (Window → Effect Controls if it isn’t visible).
Expand Motion and type 90 into Rotation for a quarter turn clockwise, -90 for counterclockwise, or 180 to turn it upside down.
If the clip no longer fills the frame, adjust Scale under Motion, or change the sequence frame size as shown below.
Open the Export tab (or File → Export → Media), choose a format and preset, and export.
If you've rotated a landscape clip to portrait, or the other way round, the sequence needs the matching shape:
For a single clip, you can also right-click it in the Project panel and choose New Sequence From Clip to get a sequence that already matches its size and frame rate. To turn a finished landscape edit into a vertical version for social media, Sequence → Auto Reframe Sequence creates a 9:16 copy and keeps the action in frame.
Premiere's flip effects live in the Effects panel rather than under Motion:
A horizontal flip is the usual fix for continuity, when a subject needs to face or move the other way. Watch for text and logos, which will read backwards. For more on when to mirror a video, see our guide.
If you'd rather drag than type, select the clip, then click the word Motion in Effect Controls. Handles appear around the clip in the Program Monitor. Move the pointer just outside a corner handle until it turns into a curved arrow, then drag to rotate. You can fine-tune the exact value in Rotation afterwards.
To spin a clip rather than turn it once, click the stopwatch next to Rotation to set a keyframe, move the playhead, then enter a new angle. Premiere animates between the two values.
If a clip just needs to be upright before you edit, fix the file first with the tool at the top of this page. Quarter turns are lossless and finish almost instantly, so the clip imports the right way up and you skip the Motion and sequence settings. You can also flip a video there when Premiere isn't open. Select the clip, open Effect Controls, expand Motion and set Rotation to 90 for clockwise or -90 for counterclockwise. Then match the sequence frame size if needed.
Search the Effects panel for "flip" and drag Horizontal Flip or Vertical Flip onto the clip. Delete the effect in Effect Controls to undo it.
The clip no longer matches the sequence shape. Change the frame size in Sequence Settings, use Set to Frame Size, or increase Scale under Motion to fill the frame.
No. Premiere edits are non-destructive. The rotation is stored in your project and applied only to the exported copy.
Rotate one clip, copy it, select the others and use Edit → Paste Attributes to apply its Motion settings. Or nest the clips and rotate the nested sequence.
Yes. Type any value into Rotation, such as 2.5 or -1.5, then raise Scale slightly so the tilted corners leave the frame.
For rotating and flipping on their own, yes: the tool on this page is free, runs in your browser and adds no watermark. For free editing on Windows, Clipchamp works well; see our Windows guide.
