Private: your video never leaves your device.

Quick answer: open the video in Google Photos, tap Edit, go to Crop, tap the rotate button until the video is upright, then save. Your phone's own gallery app usually has a similar rotate button in its editor.

Android phones vary, so button names and positions differ between brands and app versions. If your gallery can't flip, or you want the same result on every device, the tool at the top of this page runs in Chrome with no app to install.

Rotate a video with Google Photos

Google Photos is installed on most Android phones. Labels move around between versions, but the rotate button has stayed in the crop tool.

  1. Open the video

Open Google Photos and tap the video.

  2. Tap Edit

Tap Edit at the bottom of the screen to open the editor.

  3. Choose Crop

Tap Crop in the row of tools. This is where the rotate control lives.

  4. Tap rotate

Tap the rotate button until the video is upright. Each tap turns it 90°.

  5. Save

Tap Save copy (or Save). Google Photos saves the rotated video, usually as a new copy so the original stays as it was.

Rotate with Samsung Gallery and other gallery apps

Samsung and many other brands ship their own gallery app with a built-in video editor. The steps are similar everywhere: open the video, tap the edit (pencil) icon, find the crop or transform tool, use the rotate button, and save.

Recent versions of Samsung Gallery also have a flip button next to rotate. Some editors save over the original and others save a copy, so check before you delete anything.

How to flip a video on Android

Flip options vary more than rotation does. Google Photos' video editor is built around rotating and cropping and doesn't offer a flip in every version; Samsung Gallery and some other gallery apps do.

For a reliable flip on any Android phone, use the browser tool:

  1. Open rotate.video in Chrome and tap the upload area to choose your video.
  2. Turn on Flip horizontal to mirror it, or Flip vertical to swap top and bottom.
  3. Tap Export video, then Download, or use Share to send it to another app.

The difference between the two flips is explained in flip video online. To un-mirror a selfie clip, see mirror video online.

Rotate an Android video for TikTok, Reels or YouTube

Vertical 9:16 suits TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Stories; horizontal 16:9 suits YouTube, TVs and laptops. A 90° or 270° turn swaps width and height, so a 1920 × 1080 clip filmed sideways becomes 1080 × 1920 and fills a phone screen.

Check the result in your gallery before you post. Some apps read the orientation flag a phone video carries and some don't, so a clip that looks right on your phone can still arrive sideways. If that happens, rotate it in the tool above with Maximum compatibility turned on, which builds the turn into the picture.

Limitations of the built-in methods

  • Most editors rotate in 90° steps. Any straighten control crops into the picture.
  • Editors re-encode the whole video when they save, which can take a while and, depending on the app, may lower the resolution or bitrate.
  • Menus differ between brands and move around in app updates.
  • Some editors can't open every format, such as MKV or WebM files downloaded from elsewhere.

Why use the browser tool on Android

It works the same way in any modern browser on any Android phone or tablet, so you don't have to hunt for your gallery's version of the button. Quarter turns with the default Expand canvas are lossless: the original video and sound are kept as they are and only the orientation flag changes. Flips and custom angles re-encode at a high bitrate. Nothing is uploaded, and there's no watermark.

Turning a portrait clip into landscape? Choose Fill to zoom in so there are no black bars, or keep Expand and set Corners to Blur for a soft background. On an iPhone instead, see how to rotate a video on iPhone.

Rotating video on Android: FAQ

Why does my Android video play sideways?

Phones store a rotation flag that tells players which way up to show the video. If it was set wrongly while recording, or an app ignores it, the video plays sideways. Rotate it, and if one player still shows it sideways, turn on Maximum compatibility in the tool above to bake the turn into the picture.

Can I rotate a video on Android without an app?

Yes. Open this page in Chrome, choose the video, tap Left or Right until it is upright, then Export video and Download. Nothing is installed or uploaded.

How do I flip a video on Android?

Use your gallery’s flip button if it has one; recent versions of Samsung Gallery do. Otherwise, open the tool above in Chrome, turn on Flip horizontal or Flip vertical, and export.

Where does the rotated video save?

Downloads from Chrome go to your Downloads folder, which you can open from your Files app. To send the video straight to another app, use Share instead.

Can I rotate a video 90 degrees on Android without losing quality?

Yes, with the tool above. A 90°, 180° or 270° turn with the Expand canvas only changes the orientation flag, so the video itself is not re-encoded.

Does it work on Android tablets and Chromebooks?

Yes. The browser tool works in modern browsers on Android phones, tablets and Chromebooks.
